FAQs
What is an effective way to reduce road salt?
The most effective way to cut back on salt may be a more fundamental change in how it’s applied. Spraying brines—roughly one part salt to three parts water—on roads in the hours before snow starts to fall prevents ice from forming in the first place. That proactive approach reduces salt needs by anywhere between 23% and 70%.
When does salt work, and when does it not work?
Road salt tends to not work in the bitter cold. When the temperature nears 10 degrees F it becomes less effective. At 30 degrees F, 1-pound of salt will melt 46-pounds of ice. At 10 degrees F it will melt 5 pounds of salt.
