The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is studying the effects of deicing agents, AKA road salt, on tribal water resources and fish and wildlife. The Tribe is looking at road salt pollution from two perspectives. 1- The supply chain and carbon (CO2) emissions and 2- The direct effect of salt on water quality. The project is also tracking road salt applications using specialized cameras and sensors.
SRMT is exploring ways to keep our roads, streets, and walkways safe all the while reducing road salt usage and its impacts. We can have both if we learn to do it right.
Our goal is to lead the way in protecting our water resources.
